April Updates: ping pong, our namesake and more...

Take Back Our Park Day

First, we want to remind you about Take Back Our Park Day, Sunday May 16th, from 1-5pm (rain date: the 23rd). There will be many ways to provide your ideas about what Gulick Park should look like. Model making, tagging good or bad elements of the park now, adding your comments to a large map of the park, interviews and oral histories, and a survey–something for every age level. There will also be sidewalk chalk for kids and food and drink for all–and hopefully live music.

The survey is actually now available on-line here.

Please feel free to take this in advance of May 16th!

Ping Pong

Trying to bring more fun and games into the park, we have the opportunity to install an outdoor ping pong table. This would most likely be a temporary installation.

However, we want to know how much community support there is for this.

Luther Halsey Gulick

A little poking around the New York Times archive comes up with some interesting articles about and letters by the park’s elder namesake. They are indicative of his strong advocacy for physical development and for children’s rights to play time and play space in the city, particularly the Lower East Side. We’ve also posted his obituary.
