Reduced rate historical tour! Sign up now!
If 12 or more people sign up, the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy will offer a historical and architectural tour of our neighborhood at a special reduced rate: $5 per person (75 minute tour, usually $15)
Meet at Luther Gulick Park, Sunday 3:30 pm.
After assembling at Luther Gulick Park, the tour will begin with a look inside the beautifully restored Bialystoker Synagogue, just across the street from the park, on Willet. The group will learn about the role this sacred site played in the neighborhood, including serving as a stop along the Underground Railroad. From there, the group will explore East Broadway, starting with the Ritualarium, Henry Street Settlement, and Bialystoker Home for the Aged.
In addition
to the many large synagogues of the Lower East Side, the area hosted a number of tiny congregations that gathered in tenement rooms, basements and storefronts. Today, many of these shtieblach (small congregations)—some more than a century old—continue to function, mainly on East Broadway. The tour guide will point them out, as we learn more about the Jewish immigrant experience on the LES.The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy is an educational and cultural organization representing many Lower East Side synagogues, schools, and cultural institutions. The Conservancy aims to support, enhance and activate the Lower East Side’s community of living synagogues and other historic structures, and to raise public awareness of the Lower East Side’s distinct cultural identity. Join us for a walking tour of the Jewish Lower East Side.
